The Bespoke Bar
“When a client said: I want to commission a solid Silver sculpture of my rescue Eagle Owl, we of course jumped on the occasion. But we had no idea that Eagle Owls have a 6ft wing span, and prey on anything - including other owls…” Stephen Webster MBE.
The Winston bar is one of our most outlandish commissions to date. It is this breed of project that excites our team the most; eccentric, large scale and a mammoth creative challenge. One that we cannot wait to get our teeth stuck into. This particular piece was commissioned by a client who rescued an Eagle Owl, named Winston, of which he housed in a huge Avery in his garden.
Initially, the sculpture of Winston was intended to be a to-scale objet d’art. Stephen, however, had an other idea; to turn Winston into a functioning and free-standing cocktail bar tool kit. Who would say no to that?
“This piece represents 9 months of work and the skills of the best silversmith, chaser and engravers in England.”
-Stephen Webster MBE
We drafted in Tim Lukes, a master Silversmith, who happens to be very well rehearsed in creating solid Silver game birds; thus was the perfect craftsman for this venture. Tim’s workshop is right on the seafront in St Ives (unusually, in an ex-lifeboat outpost), where he works with his Daughter, Alice. Half way through the project, Stephen migrated to the Cornish coast to see Winston coming to life.
Watch the film below to see all the stages involved in creating this masterpiece.
“The prey is depicted as the bar tools. And before you ask, the owls head twists off to reveal the cocktail shaker.”
-Stephen Webster MBE
